Hilma Blomberg was born in 1863 in Ytter Ekeby, Fellingsbro parish, Västmanland. She was daughter to the schoolteacher Karl Magnus Blomberg. The family lived in the schoolhouse in Ytter Ekeby where Hilma also worked as schoolteacher in her early years. She married Henrik Tjäder and the couple came to serve as missionaries in China. Between 1889 and 1933 they lived in China for several periods.
